Patrick Mahomes Autograph Cards: The Set-Family Checklist

Search for a “Patrick Mahomes signed card” and you will get two completely different things in the same results: certified autograph cards, signed for the card company before packaging, and hand-signed cards, signed in person or through the mail afterwards. They are priced differently, authenticated differently, and faked differently. This checklist covers both — first the set families that carry factory-certified Mahomes signatures, then what to demand from anything hand-signed.

It is the autograph companion to our rookie card checklist. As on every reference page here, we do not quote card numbers, print runs, or pop counts — those get misremembered constantly. We name the real set families and link to live eBay listings so you are always looking at the actual card on the market today.

Certified auto vs. hand-signed — the distinction that decides everything

• Certified autograph card. Signed for the manufacturer, then packed out. The card back carries a statement of authenticity, and the signature’s provenance is part of the product. This is the majority of what serious collectors buy.
• Hand-signed card. A normal base or insert card signed later — at an event, a signing, or through the mail. It can be perfectly genuine, but nothing about the card itself proves it. Value depends on third-party authentication (see below), not on the seller’s word.

Mahomes is one of the most forged signatures in the modern hobby. The practical rule: buy certified, or buy hand-signed only when it is encapsulated by a recognized authenticator. Our guide to spotting fake Mahomes autographs covers the tells in detail.

How to read an autograph listing

Four attributes drive what a certified Mahomes auto is worth, and every one of them is visible in a good listing:

1. On-card vs. sticker. On-card means he signed the card surface directly; sticker means he signed a clear label the manufacturer then applied. All else equal, on-card commands the premium — it is the single biggest descriptor to check.
2. Rookie-year vs. veteran-season. Only 2017 signatures are rookie-year autos. A signed card from a later season is a legitimate certified auto but not a rookie card, and the market prices that gap sharply. Our year-by-year guide explains why 2017 is the only rookie year.
3. Plain auto vs. patch auto. A Rookie Patch Autograph (RPA) combines the signature with an embedded jersey swatch and, usually, serial numbering — the format at the very top of the market.
4. Base auto vs. numbered parallel. Most autograph cards sit at the bottom of a ladder of scarcer numbered versions, exactly like the base-card parallel rainbow.

The rookie-year autograph families (2017)

The signatures that carry rookie status. This is where the money is, and where the fakes concentrate.

• Panini Contenders — Rookie Ticket Autograph. The flagship rookie-year on-card auto and the one most collectors chase first, with ticket tiers and parallels inside the product plus a short-printed photo variation. Full breakdown in the 2017 Panini Contenders set review.
• Panini National Treasures — Rookie Patch Autograph. The crown jewel: on-card signature, jersey patch, serial numbering. The 2017 National Treasures set review walks through the RPA and its parallels.
• The premium tier alongside them. Panini’s high-end NFL brands — Flawless, Immaculate Collection, Panini One, Impeccable and their peers — each carry low-numbered signature and patch-auto content in the same tier as National Treasures.
• Chromium signature cards. The three flagship chrome families each carry certified autograph versions with their own colored, numbered parallels: Prizm, Donruss Optic and Select. These are usually the most attainable route to a rookie-year certified auto.
• Mid-tier signature products. Brands such as Absolute, Certified, Limited, Playbook, Spectra and Origins round out the rookie-year auto landscape, often mixing on-card and sticker signatures within one product.
• Unlicensed draft-brand autographs. Signed cards from draft-era brands outside the NFL license also exist from his draft year. They carry no NFL team logos or marks, are usually shown in college or generic uniform, and are not treated as NFL rookie cards by the market — legitimate autographs, different category, much lower prices. Check the listing for a manufacturer’s certification statement before assuming anything.

Every certified Mahomes autograph is a Panini card

This is the fastest authenticity filter in his market, and it survived the licence change. Panini held the NFL licence from 2016 through the 2025 season; Fanatics-owned Topps holds it from 2026 — and Mahomes’ autograph rights did not move with it. The evidence: 2025 Topps Chrome Football, the first fully NFL-licensed Topps product since 2015, gives Mahomes a base card (#148) and a long insert run but no autograph at all. Read that product’s autograph checklist end to end and the only Chiefs veteran signature in it is Xavier Worthy (Base Auto BA-XW); every other signed Chief is a 2025 rookie. He is also entirely absent from the unlicensed 2024 Topps Chrome Football, whose Kansas City team set is retired legends #93–100 plus Worthy #208.

Panini, meanwhile, spent the licence’s last season building two releases out of nothing but Mahomes signatures:

• 2025 Panini Authentically Mahomes Football (20 February 2026) — hard-signed, Flawless-tier, every card Mahomes. Signature subsets: 2 PM Gem Signatures (5 cards /15), Championship Signature Inscriptions (3 /15), Play Call Autographs (5 /15), Q&A Signature Inscriptions (7 /15), Game Used Jersey Autos (5 /15), Historic Patch Autos (5 /15), Dual Autographs (4 /15), a six-card Mahomes Autograph Collection, and 1/1 booklets including an MVP Booklet, a Super Bowl Gems booklet for each title, a Prestigious Cuts booklet with Len Dawson, a six-signature Chiefs booklet and an eight-quarterback booklet.
• 2025 Panini Mahomes Icon Collection Football (4 March 2026) — the retail companion. Its autographs are Gold /15 only: Crown of the Kingdom, Mahomes Magic and Rocket Launch, five cards each. If a listing offers an Icon Collection auto in any other colour, read it twice.

So: a licence covers a player’s image; an autograph needs a separate signing contract. A certified Topps Mahomes autograph does not currently exist — treat any such listing as unverified, whatever the slab says. The veteran-season autograph families

Mahomes has appeared in Panini signature content in most seasons since his rookie year, so the supply of certified autos is far broader than the 2017 checklist above suggests. Practically:

• The premium brands (National Treasures, Flawless, Immaculate and company) issue new low-numbered Mahomes autos annually — often with championship- or MVP-themed designs. See the championship-era money page for that cut of the market.
• Contenders continues its ticket-autograph format for veterans, so a “Contenders Mahomes auto” listing is not automatically a Rookie Ticket. Check the year.
• Multi-brand repack products (Panini Chronicles and similar) fold many design families into one release, which is why the same season can produce Mahomes autos under a dozen different brand names.

Veteran autos are the value end of the certified market: factory-guaranteed signatures without the rookie-year premium.

Redemptions — the one format to read twice

When a signed card is not ready at production time, the manufacturer inserts a redemption: a placeholder card with a code you submit to receive the real card later. Redemptions are normal and legitimate, but they carry risks a finished card does not:

• The code may already have been redeemed. Confirm with the seller that it is unredeemed.
• Redemption programs have expiration and replacement policies — an old code may return a replacement card rather than the one pictured.
• Because of that uncertainty, an unredeemed code should not price like the card it names.

If it is hand-signed: what authentication actually proves

For a card signed after the fact, the only meaningful evidence is a recognized third-party authenticator — PSA/DNA, JSA (James Spence Authentication), or Beckett Authentication Services (BAS). Encapsulation matters as much as the letter: a slab ties the opinion permanently to that specific card, while a loose certificate can be paired with any card later.

A seller’s own “COA” is not authentication. Neither is a photo of the signing unless the item is clearly identifiable. If you are buying a hand-signed Mahomes card at any real price, buy it already encapsulated — and see the fakes guide for what a forged signature actually looks like.

A five-step autograph buying checklist

1. Pick your lane — rookie-year certified, veteran certified, or authenticated hand-signed. They are three different markets.
2. Confirm the format — on-card or sticker, plain auto or patch auto, base or numbered parallel.
3. Check the year on anything described as a rookie auto. 2017 only.
4. Demand proof — a manufacturer certification statement, or a PSA/DNA, JSA, or BAS encapsulation.
5. Price on sold comps for that exact card and grade, never on open asking prices.
