PSA vs. SGC vs. BGS vs. CGC — how the graders compare

Eyeball your grade odds first

Before you spend anything, look hard at four things under good light — the same four BGS scores as sub-grades:

Centering. Are the borders even left-to-right and top-to-bottom? This is the most common grade-killer on modern cards. Measure it precisely with the centering tool — if it’s badly off, a 10 is off the table.
Corners. Sharp and clean, or soft and fraying? Corners show handling first.
Edges. Look for chipping and whitening, especially on dark or chromium borders where wear shows.
Surface. Print lines, scratches, and (on chrome) scuffing. Tilt the card under light to catch what’s invisible head-on.

A modern card that’s clean on all four is a real shot at a 9 or 10. Anything with an obvious flaw is long odds — grade accordingly, or sell it raw.
