Patrick Mahomes Cards Year by Year: Every Season That Shaped His Collection
A season-by-season map of Patrick Mahomes cards — why 2017 is the only rookie year, how his MVP and Super Bowl runs created distinct collecting cuts, and which cards define each era, with live eBay listings for every part of his cardboard.
Patrick Mahomes has been a professional since 2017, and there is a Mahomes card from every season along the way — but not every season matters equally to a collector. This guide walks his cardboard year by year so you understand what each era actually produced, why one single year towers over all the others, and how his MVP and Super Bowl runs created collecting cuts of their own. Each part of his career links straight to live eBay listings so you can shop the exact era you want.
If you’re brand new, start with our main collecting guide for budget tiers, then use the rookie card checklist to find the right 2017 brand. This page zooms out to the whole timeline.
As always, we don’t quote print runs, pop counts, or prices — those get misremembered and move with every grading submission and every sale. We describe how each era is built and point you to the live, current market on eBay.
The one rule that shapes everything: 2017 is the only rookie year
Before the timeline, internalize the single most important fact about Mahomes cards: a rookie card only comes from a player’s first year in licensed products. For Mahomes that is 2017, the year the Kansas City Chiefs drafted him 10th overall out of Texas Tech. Every genuine Mahomes rookie card — no matter the brand — carries a 2017 copyright.
That means a “2019 Mahomes rookie” or a “2021 Mahomes rookie” does not exist. Cards from those years are veteran-season base cards, inserts, and autographs. Some listings misuse the word “rookie” to inflate a later card; knowing the rule protects you. Everything below is organized around it.
2017 — the rookie year (the foundation of every collection)
This is the year that mints the cards the whole market is built on. As a rookie, Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith for most of the season before taking the field late, but Panini’s full 2017 lineup still produced his rookie cards across every tier:
- Flagship chromium rookies — 2017 Panini Prizm (the base and the iconic Silver Prizm), Donruss Optic (the chrome Rated Rookie plus its Holo), and Panini Select (the tiered Concourse / Premier / Field Level rookie). These three are the core chase — see the 2017 Prizm, Donruss Optic, and Select set reviews.
- Accessible base rookies — 2017 Donruss Rated Rookie and Score, the affordable entry points every collector can own.
- Rookie autographs — 2017 Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket signatures are the premier on-card rookie auto, and National Treasures delivers the RPA (rookie patch auto) that sits at the very top of the market. See the National Treasures set review and our guide on spotting fake Mahomes autographs before buying signed cards.
If you take one thing from the whole timeline: the 2017 rookies are the blue-chip, most-liquid core of a Mahomes collection. Start here.
2018 — the breakout MVP season (first veteran cards)
In his first year as the starter, Mahomes exploded — a ~50-touchdown season that earned him the NFL MVP and lifted the Chiefs to the AFC Championship. His 2018 cards are the first veteran-season cards, not rookies, but they carry the story of the season that turned him into a superstar. Collectors who missed the rookie window at ground-floor prices sometimes look to strong second-year cards and numbered parallels as a more attainable way in. Read every listing’s year carefully — this is exactly the era where “rookie” gets misapplied.
2019–2024 — the championship-era cards
This stretch is where Mahomes became a dynasty quarterback, and it created a distinct collecting cut fans chase by name:
- 2019 season — capped by a Super Bowl LIV title and a Super Bowl MVP, his first ring.
- 2020 season — another dominant year and a return to the Super Bowl.
- 2022 season — a second NFL MVP and a Super Bowl LVII championship, with Mahomes earning his second Super Bowl MVP award for the game itself.
- 2023 season — a Super Bowl LVIII title, completing back-to-back championships and a third Super Bowl MVP award.
- 2024 season — an AFC repeat and a fourth Super Bowl trip, but the run for three straight titles ended there: the Chiefs fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. It’s still a real part of the collecting cut — a Super Bowl-appearance season, not a title season — and cards from it belong in the “championship era” conversation even though the ring count didn’t grow.
There’s no special “champion” product — these are the base cards, inserts, and autographs from those specific seasons, sought out because they tie the cardboard to a milestone run (win or loss). Modern Panini products from this era (Prizm, Select, Mosaic and others) layer deep numbered parallel rainbows and premium autos on top of the base, so there’s a wide range of price points. Because “Super Bowl” is such a common search term, confirm the actual year, product, and result in every listing — not every title-run season ended in a ring. For a focused list of this cut — with live eBay rails for title-run base, inserts, and numbered autos — see Patrick Mahomes championship-era cards.
The latest seasons — and the licence change that split his card catalogue in two
The single biggest change since his rookie year: the NFL card licence has moved. Panini held the exclusive from 2016 through the 2025 season; Fanatics-owned Topps holds it from 2026. For a Mahomes collector that creates a clean, permanent split — and one very specific gap worth knowing before you buy.
- 2016–2025 seasons — Panini. Every Mahomes rookie, and the bulk of his catalogue, is a Panini card.
- 2024 Topps Chrome Football — he is not in it. Topps revived the name a year early as an unlicensed, NFLPA-only set (airbrushed, no team or league marks). Its Kansas City team set is retired legends (#93–100) plus rookie Xavier Worthy #208. No Mahomes card exists in it.
- 2025 Topps Chrome Football (released 15 April 2026) — his first Topps cards ever. The first fully NFL-licensed Topps product since 2015. Mahomes is base #148, with Base Etch and Base Image variations, and runs through the insert checklist: Fanatical FF-14, Fortune 15 F15-6, Game Genies GG-3, Helix HX-2, Kaiju KAI-2, Let’s Go LG-5, Power Players PP-6, Shadow Etch SE-1, Ultra Violet UV-15, Urban Legends UL-11.
- 2026 Topps Flagship Football (21 August 2026) restored the flagship NFL series for the first time since 2015.
- Panini still prints football — 2026 Donruss Football is dated 30 September 2026 — but its pro cards are now unlicensed and carry no Chiefs marks, with the published rundown describing a checklist that “focuses more on retired greats and the next crop of college stars.”
The gap: there is no Topps Mahomes autograph. 2025 Topps Chrome gives him base cards and inserts but no signature — the only Chiefs veteran autograph in that product is Xavier Worthy (Base Auto BA-XW). A licence covers a player’s image; an autograph needs a separate signing contract, and Mahomes’ remains with Panini. Every certified Mahomes autograph is a Panini card. Treat any “Topps Chrome Mahomes auto” listing as unverified.
Panini’s parting shot: two products that are nothing but Mahomes
The clearest proof that his signature stayed with Panini is that, in the licence’s final season, Panini built two entire releases around him.
- 2025 Panini Authentically Mahomes Football (released 20 February 2026) — a Flawless-tier, hard-signed release where every card is Mahomes. The base is Base 15s Silver, 15 cards /25 covering his Chiefs career (parallels Red /15, Gold /10, Platinum 1/1), and Base 5s Silver, 5 cards /25 from his Texas Tech years (Scarlet /15, Gold /10, Platinum 1/1). The signature checklist runs 2 PM Gem Signatures (5 cards /15), Championship Signature Inscriptions (3 /15), Play Call Autographs (5 /15), Q&A Signature Inscriptions (7 /15), Game Used Jersey Autos (5 /15), Historic Patch Autos (5 /15), Dual Autographs (4 /15), a 6-card Mahomes Autograph Collection, plus 1/1 booklets — an MVP Booklet, a Super Bowl Gems booklet for each title, a Prestigious Cuts booklet pairing him with Len Dawson, a six-signature Chiefs booklet (Marcus Allen, Christian Okoye, Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Joe Montana, Andy Reid) and an eight-quarterback booklet with Aikman, Manning, Namath, Brees, Bradshaw, Elway and Montana.
- 2025 Panini Mahomes Icon Collection Football (released 4 March 2026) — the retail-priced companion. Base Icon Collection is 25 cards, with inserts Icon Highlights (25), Icon Connections (25, pairing him with teammates including Travis Kelce), Touchdown Architect (14), Title Waves (6), Campus Legends (5, Texas Tech), Crown of the Kingdom (5), Mahomes Magic (5) and Rocket Launch (5). Its autographs exist in Gold /15 only — Crown of the Kingdom, Mahomes Magic and Rocket Launch, 5 cards each — alongside Game Gear and Highlight Materials relics (5 each).
(All card counts, print runs and release dates above read off the linked published checklists, 24 August 2026.)
Beyond that, every current season keeps adding to the Mahomes market: new base cards, insert sets, and low-numbered autographs. The insert side is where most of the post-rookie excitement lives — see Mahomes insert cards explained for the Downtown / Kaboom / Color Blast families and how they differ from parallels. These are the most affordable Mahomes cards to pull fresh, and the numbered/auto tiers give higher-end collectors something new to chase each year. For an active, still-in-his-prime superstar, demand across the whole timeline has stayed remarkably strong — but the rookies remain the anchor.
How to shop the timeline
- Building a core collection? Start with a graded 2017 rookie in your budget — ideally a Prizm or Optic — then branch outward.
- Chasing the story? Add championship-era cards from his title and MVP seasons.
- On a budget? Modern base cards and second-year veteran cards give you Mahomes cardboard without rookie pricing.
- Going premium? Numbered parallels and on-card autographs — bought graded — are the top of every era.
Whatever era you’re after, price it on live eBay sold comps, and buy graded (PSA, BGS, or SGC) for anything valuable — his cards are among the most counterfeited in the hobby. To go deeper on the parallel colors and serial numbers you’ll see across every year, read our Prizm & Optic parallels explained guide. And when you’re ready to shop specific cuts, the money pages break them out: rookie cards, card values, and autographs.
